There’s nothing better than the taste of fresh herbs in a freshly cooked meal, but if you don’t have a garden, these herbs can easily be grown on a windowsill or in a window box and have fantastic health benefits too.
Many mainstream supermarkets sell these in small containers, so there is no need to grow them from seed.
1. Fresh Coriander
Use in: Soups and curries
Why is it good for you as you get older? Coriander is high in fibre and is packed full of healthy vitamins such as A, C, E and K.
2. Fresh Parsley
Use in: Soups and fish dishes, or simply sprinkle onto mashed potato
Why is it good for you as you get older? Parsley is high in antioxidants, fibre and has a multitude of vitamins in including vitamin A, C and K in it.
3. Fresh Thyme
Use in: Roast chicken, rice, potato gratin, lamb or cookies
Why is it good for you as you get older? Thyme is packed full of great vitamins such as C and A, however it also includes copper, iron, manganese and fibre.
4. Fresh Basil
Use in: Italian dishes such as pizza, spaghetti bolognaise, bruschetta or simply sprinkle on top of salads.
Why is it good for you as you get older? Basil is also packed full of healthy vitamins such as vitamin A, C and K. It also includes magnesium, calcium and more surprisingly omega-3 fatty acids.
5. Fresh Mint
Use in: Mint is probably one of the hardier herbs and can be grown quite easily. Add a few sprigs into a pot of new potatoes for a fresh finish or add to alcoholic cocktails such as Mojito or Pimm’s.
Why is it good for you as you get older? Mint is thought to help digestion, so is good to use for a tummy upset, wind or ingestion. It includes vitamin C and A but also has a small amount of potassium in it, magnesium, phosphorus and calcium.
