It’s important we keep our bodies at the correct temperate throughout the day and avoid overheating during the warmer months. The NHS advises that this can be worse for some people. For example, those who are elderly or less mobile, it’s important to maintain the correct body heat. Here are some top tips on how to keep cool this summer:
Although it sounds obvious, it’s important to drink lots of water thought-out the day, especially when its warm. If you have an elderly relative, suggest a plastic water bottle with ice is prepared in the morning to provide lots of water throughout the day. Ice pops or homemade frozen fruit juices are a great idea. Alternatively, eat cool foods straight from the refrigerator which are rich in moisture, like melons, pineapple and cucumber. These clever alternatives can easily keep older people cool during the day.
Although not many standard flats or houses in the UK have air conditioning, some modern retirement developments have air conditioning in communal areas such as the lounge or dining room. This helps keep residents cool during the day and in the evening.
If air conditioning is not an option, ordinary fans are just as good. In addition, select a battery operated or ordinary hand fan to keep cool. In addition, a large bowl of cold water filled with ice on a window ledge is thought to cool the room.
Cool cotton clothes and a hat
The material of the clothes we wear along with the colours can have a huge effect on how cool we feel. To keep older people cool while out and about, try opting for light coloured cotton, loose fitting clothes to feel as cool as possible. And a hat to protect your head from the sun.
Good house ventilation
Ventilation is key when trying to keep a house and older people cool throughout the day, it’s advisable to keep two opposite windows open to allow a breeze to pass through and to keep the temperature down.
Black out thermal blinds
Black out thermal blinds keep the house warm in winter and cool in the summer. They usually have a white lining on the back which reflects the heat whilst keeping the sun out. This also keeps the room at its coolest.
